Calibration determines an instrument’s error and uncertainty with no pass/fail judgment. Legal verification is a government judgment of compliance with a legal criterion. “검교정” is a colloquial term — what an accredited laboratory performs is precisely “calibration.”

What is calibration?
Calibration establishes the relationship between the values an instrument indicates and those realized by a reference standard, determining the error and the confidence range (measurement uncertainty). The point is not to pass or fail the device but to reveal how far off it is — securing traceability to national measurement standards.

What is legal verification?
Legal verification is a government (or designated body) judgment of whether an instrument meets a legal criterion. It applies to “legal measuring instruments” used in trade or certification (gas meters, water meters, electricity meters, fuel dispensers), producing a pass/fail result — the device may be used only if it passes.
“검교정” is not a precise term
“검교정” is a field expression combining inspection and calibration; it is not part of standard metrology vocabulary. It is not wrong to use casually, but in formal documents or procurement specs it is clearer to say “calibration” (accuracy management) or “verification” (legal judgment) as appropriate. What an accredited laboratory does — issuing a calibration certificate — is precisely “calibration.”
So what does a gas detector need?
Gas detectors generally do not fall under the legal measuring instruments subject to verification under the Act on Measures. Their certification, testing, and inspection requirements can vary by product use and applicable standards, and calibration is carried out to manage measurement accuracy. In short, to keep a device reporting accurate values, periodic calibration is what you need.
